Dragons are cool, aren't they?

Kia ora! My name is Edward Pattillo. I'm also known in some circles as Ekendra Dasa. Wild Mind Productions is my creative outlet and this website serves as my portfolio / online business card. You can contact me directly from here or via the social media links at the bottom.

Audio Production

Wild Mind Productions started in 1996 with a Roland VS880 digital multitrack recording unit, a DAT machine and a few decent microphones. Since then it has evolved proportionately with my skill base and personal economy. Nearly 20 years later, the focus is still on manifesting ideas into audible reality.

Although I've recorded and worked on many projects, I've always done it for the "love" of it even though it has, at times, been an income stream of sorts. So I'm obviously not completely averse to commercialization of music, but when I hear the term "music industry" thrown around I shudder at the sound. How can something so intrinsic to human expression be classified as an "industry", I ask rhetorically? I didn't hear this phrase until around the turn of the century. I think the language indicates something amiss in our collective consiousness.

Whoops, there I go 'a ranting and I've only just started writing here. Anyway, I've done several courses at the School of Audio Engineering to upskill my recording and production techniques. I'm also blessed with some pretty decent gear which you can peruse here. I cater to all types of music and I especially get a kick out of live recording. I'm happy to work on anything from Norwegian black metal, classic R&B, to ethereal kirtan. I'll even have a crack at oompa loompa polka if you send me some stems.

Web Development

My adventures in web design and programming go back to my enthusiasm as a child in the 1980s to get computers to interact with people. I was inspired by a text based RPG game called Zork to learn the BASIC programming language when I was a wee lad and my interest and training have extended from there. I was designing web pages as early as 1997 when the potential of the internet was just beginning to expand beyond the domain of academics and "geeks". Granted, that work was a bit basic compared to what you see on the net today, but the feeling of coding the HTML myself was a buzz. The thrill came from being able to basically design a GUI with much less effort than I'd ever experienced.

From there I went to university with the idea that I'd learn development "proper" but ended up mostly learning from online tutorials anyway as the projects I wanted to work on were a bit beyond the scope of what they catered for. Still, I learned PHP there which opened huge doors. With PHP, MySQL and some Javascript, I could make applications that were cross-platform and accessible from any computer. This blew my mind.

After that I got really involved with content management systems (CMS) such as Drupal and WordPress. I contributed some themes and put up heaps of websites with relative ease.

Although I respect the value of such systems and still use them as needed, I've returned to programming and designing my own sites from scratch such as the one you're viewing now. I figure the need for big websites these days is limited. Most people and businesses want a simple, accessible and easy to maintain static page with a responsive, mobile-first focus: easy on the eyes, easy on the brain. I feel that society has moved on from being enamoured by technological possibility and are now focused on usability.
